Christmas Market 2026: the dates, the hours, the truth
The internet gives you four different closing dates. Here is what the organisers have said, and what to expect on Eyre Square from Friday.

Search for the Galway Christmas Market dates and you will find 22 December, 24 December, 31 December and 5 January, each stated with confidence. We checked where every number comes from.
What we are confident of
- Opens
- Friday 6 November 2026, Eyre Square. Every source agrees.
- Market closes
- Tuesday 22 December, per Galway Tourism. This Is Galway lists 24 December. Several hotel sites say 31 December, and one of them admits the organisers had yet to confirm. We are going with 22 December until the organisers say otherwise.
- Big Wheel and amusements
- Continue to 3 January 2027.
- Hours
- Mon to Wed 12:00 to 20:00 (bar to 22:00) · Thu to Sat 10:00 to 22:00 · Sun 10:00 to 20:00
- Entry
- Free. Rides and the grotto are paid.
What is there
This is the market’s 16th year. Expect over 50 wooden chalets around the square, the 32 metre observation wheel, the carousel, Santa’s Express train, the German Bier Keller run by the Róisín Dubh crowd, and the light gardens for the photo. Santa’s Grotto sits between the Browne Doorway and the main tree. Last year the organisers counted over 450,000 visitors across six weeks, so Thursday to Saturday evenings are shoulder to shoulder.
Our advice
- Go midweek, early. Monday to Wednesday from noon is the easy window.
- Arrive by bus or train. The square is beside both stations and the surrounding streets close to traffic on busy nights. See Useful Info for routes.
- Ride the wheel after dark. It stays open a fortnight longer than the stalls.
We will update this piece the day the organisers publish a confirmed closing date, and the What’s On listing with it.
