Christmas Lights Switch-On: Cross Street, Friday at six
The Latin Quarter turns its lights on the same evening the market opens on Eyre Square. Where to stand, when to arrive, and why this corner.

Friday 6 November is a double evening in the city. The Christmas Market opens its chalets on Eyre Square, and down in the Latin Quarter the streets get their lights. The switch happens at the junction of Cross Street and Quay Street at 18:00. It is free, it is outdoors, and it is over in twenty minutes, so the timing matters more than usual.
The plan
- When
- Friday 6 November 2026, 18:00. Be there by 17:40.
- Where
- Corner of Cross Street and Quay Street, Latin Quarter. Outside Tigh Neachtain if you need a landmark.
- Cost
- Free. No tickets.
- How long
- About 20 minutes at the corner, then the lights stay on nightly to early January.
- Confirmed by
- Latin Quarter traders. We will update the time here if it changes.
Why this corner
Cross Street is short, maybe 120 metres from the Augustinian church to Quay Street, and it has the densest canopy of lights in the city: strings run building to building the whole way, which is why the photographs you see every December are usually taken from here. The Latin Quarter has run its own switch-on since the traders’ group formed, separate from the council ceremony on Eyre Square, and in most years the Santa Express has made this corner its first stop on the way up to Woodquay and the square.
How the evening runs
- 17:40 · Arrive. The corner fills fast and the streets are narrow.
- 18:00 · Countdown and switch-on at the Cross Street / Quay Street junction. Expect a choir or a brass band, and Santa if the Express is running again this year.
- 18:20 · Walk it. Quay Street to the Spanish Arch takes five minutes; back up High Street and Shop Street to Eyre Square takes ten, and the market is open until 22:00 on opening night.
Our advice
- Bring the buggy, not the car. The Latin Quarter is pedestrianised and the surrounding streets close on busy evenings. Bus to Eyre Square and walk down Shop Street. See Useful Info for routes.
- Eat first or eat late. Every table in the quarter is booked between six and eight on switch-on night.
- Photographs. Stand at the Quay Street end looking back up Cross Street towards the church. The lights line up.
The event is in What’s On. If the traders change the time, that listing and this piece change with it.
